Dr. Matthew W. Mitchell

About Matt

Matt grew up on a farm in northeast Saskatchewan. His early years in a wood-stove heated, former one-room schoolhouse, coupled with long winters, shaped his resilience and resourcefulness, strengths he brings to his legal practice. Before law school, he spent nearly two decades as an award-winning university professor.

At the University at Buffalo School of Law, Matt focused on the skills of client representation in all stages of litigation (trial, appeals, mediation). He was a member of UB Trial Teams in multiple competitions and was on first-place teams in intramural moot court and mediation competitions. He graduated cum laude with a Concentration in Advocacy.

Before joining Lewis & Lewis as a law clerk in 2023, Matt gained hands-on experience as a student attorney with the Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo and multiple public interest legal clinics, where he was able to assist working men and women navigate complex legal and personal challenges.

In his free time, Matt enjoys reading, music, sports, and spending time with family, pets, and neighbors.

He has made the City of Buffalo his home since 2008.
